It's clear to see that the narrator, the woman in the relationship, was painfully being forced into the role her husband was expecting of her - one used to simply satisfy his needs and be owned by him as long as he provided empty words and gifts. The comparison between the way the narrator doubted her worth while forcing herself to conform and the painful, yet freeing reality of being alone and completing herself rather than trying to complete someone else was powerful.
