I am simply amazed. The art, poems, and reflections posted on this website are undoubtedly empowering.
Through this post, I wish to reflect on the artwork Extra Weight. As a woman living in the 21st century, I can surely admit that I have experienced the "tyranny of slenderness." Scrolling through social media, I frequently see images of women with hourglass figures or small waists, often considered as traits of an attractive body type by many. It is also the case that women with such body type gain more attention and praise on these platforms. Such is a prime example of women subjecting themselves to the male gaze, a sexualized way of observing that empowers men but objectifies women. That being said, the artwork Extra Weight truly made me reflect on the toxic standards imposed by the patriarchal society and the tremendous "weight" these values can put on a woman. I wonder, 'what was the primary catalyst to women becoming so conscious of their body image?' Also, 'is there any way we can eliminate the subjection of women to the male gaze?'
